Tempting Porsches #1
I've primarily been checking Craigslist.com for used Porsches online. Time has prevented me from looking too seriously for a car at this point, but I'm trying to at least get an idea of what's out there. I've seen a fair number of decent cars, but aside from Boxsters and Cayennes, screaming deals have been a bit elusive.
I have been watching a few cars go down in price the last couple of weeks. Here are a couple that are a bit on the tempting side.
Temptation #1: 1999 Porsche 911 Cabriolet
I've seen a couple of decent deals on 911 Cabriolets. I know it's the end of "the season" for convertibles, but I really don't get the notion that convertibles have a season. I drove a Mustang convertible for a little over a year and enjoyed it all winter long. The rain didn't really make that much difference to me. I stayed dry while in the car and got wet when I got out of the car (it's Oregon after all).
This car has dropped about $5000 over the last month of looking to $23,450. It has lots of options, only about 60,000 miles, and seems to be in great condition. Other than it being white, I'm not a big white car fan, it'd be a great car to drive. The convertible would be a blast. Plus it has heated seats, so maybe I can talk my wife into it more easily.
Temptation #2: 1984 Porsche 928 SE
When I mentioned to my wife "Hey hon, how about a 928?", her response was "You going to look for a new wife too?". This car is only $5900, down for $8000 when I first started seeing it on Craigslist. It looks like it has some decent upgrades and was even seen on the Rockford Files and Simon and Simon.
I'm not sure why this is tempting to me. 928s are getting a little long in the tooth. But I've always liked them and kind of wanted one. Even though my wife says they look like a Gremlin.

No, the 928 SE isn't mine. It's one I've seen online here and there and was kind of interested in it because of the TV history. I thought it'd be fun to own. I haven't been out to look at it yet, but if I make it out to see it, I'll check the numbers. How did you come by the VIN and engine number? You have history with the car?

I know where a really sweet 928 is the guy has it for sale and would probably let it go pretty cheap, in great shape, silver nice wheels and tires.

I'm not sure shelby… #1 is a beatiful car but if you have the time, money and ambition the 928 could blow it out of the water no questions asked.
Suprising enough white cars appear cleaner next to or compared a black car… believe me i've owned both
If it weren't for the possibility of ruining the interior i'd have no problem driving around with the top down in the pouring rain just to be able to ride around in a whip like that… no doubt!

Don't get me wrong but in my opinion it has to be a 911. I have been looking into buying a Porsche for quite a while now and I just don't think I would wnat to go for anything else. Yes, the Boxter looks similar and is less expensive but if I spend the money it has to be a 911!

The 911 is definitely the best sports car made. If you have a chance to buy one or ride in one, it is definitely worth it.

I love option #1. Even if option #2 could outrun it if properly tuned, I would think the 911 would still be a lot more fun to drive. The 928 looks seriously dated and the color is drab, but the 911 gets your heart started before you even get in it. Add to it the fact that it's a convertible… yeah, definitely #1.

I only wish the prices on other cars would go down – I'm suprised this economy hasn't made people sell cars cheaply yet. But I guess it does make it easier to get really nice cars.

I don't think that the high end car market is going to fall to hard. Because it isn't really the big sallaried guys that are hurting dramatically. Sure some have been let go and pays may have been docked, but the high end car companies are looking for people with deep pockets, and deep pockets keep you out of the fall for a little bit longer than the "working" man. So unfortunatly for those of us enthusiasts who work our hands to the bone for what we already have, i don't see things getting to pretty for us

I'd have to support temptation #1 for the sheer fact that its a convertible and I'm of the school that a true sports car should always have the option to drop the top and let your hair flow.

The 911 Cabrio is nice although white would be far down
the list on color choices. I've always been a fan of the 928
but an S4 would be the starting point. Obviously a GTS would
be my goal but they're few and far between.May 14th, 2009 at 8:02 pm -

Well it's that season again! So did you pick the 1999 Porsche 911 Cabriolet? It is definitely Tempation #1, lol I hope your wife went for it and your cruising in it. You mentioned Craigslist…are you looking outside of your area? Sometimes you might find something in another state. It might require a drive but the price may be well worth it! Good luck!

@Deo – I did end up with a 1999 Porsche 911 Cabriolet, just not a white one. I'm constantly looking outside my area, but my efforts have been mostly on ebay and cars.com. Love to find a deal on a 911 Turbo or early 930.
