I usually try to do a pre-purchase inspection when you are spending a good sum of money on a car. It has worked pretty succesfully for me to confirm that once I have done my looking around and research, the car I decide to buy is going to be sound.

If you have a mechanic you trust who specializes in Porsches or german cars, or whichever car you're thinking of buying, i'd take it there for an inspection before buying. By law, I believe, a dealer must oblige to let you take the car to a mechanic or whoever, if you're seriously considering buying it. Thats what I did with my car.

The biggest thing I found is taking my time and going through everything. Always seems like I notice little things when I get home with a car. I tend to be a bit more emotional buyer though (car dealers love me), so I have to keep that in check and figure I'm going to walk away from several cars before I find something worthwhile.

I think one of the best general pieces of advice I got from the book is specifically looking at each "area" of the car rather than kind of the shotgun approach. Go over the exterior, move on to the interior, try everything out, then fire it up and listen to and feel the engine, do the same while you drive, etc. Most times we know when something seems out of place, so looking for that kind of thing.

I am actually going to be going to look at a car this weekend (sadly not a 911) -- any tips that you thought were particularly good / not commonly known in the inspection section?
