Weekly Porsche Wrap

Not a lot happening the past couple of weeks Porsche news wise. This is what I found at least mildly interesting this past week.

Porsche left out of Gran Turismo 5 – Die hard race/driving sim fans the world over are going to be left Porscheless in the latest version of Gran Turismo. Everything from Corvettes to Mercedes-Benz will be in the new game with over 950 cars to choose from set in 20 locations with 70 layouts, but NO Porsche. A spokesman cited "licensing issues" as the reason Porsche wasn't included. Too bad. Gran Tursimo has some unbelievably life-like cars to choose from. Guess all the gamer geeks will have to save their pennies for the real thing. [Via PS3center.net]

2010 Porsche factory drivers announced – In an effort to at least dip a toe in racing this year, thanks in part by James O's challenge to take in a race, here are the factory drivers for the 2010 season:

Marc Lieb and Richard Lietz will again compete in the Le Mans Series for the Felbermayr-Proton team, while Patrick Pilet will compete with IMSA Performance Matmut.

Jorg Bergmeister and Patrick Long return to defend their American Le Mans Series title with Flying Lizard Motorsports while Wolf Henzler will compete for the Falken Tire team, while Timo Bernhard and Romain Dumas will fly the flag for Porsche in the Nurburgring 24 Hours. [Quote from Crash.net]

At least I've got a few names to try and keep up with. Most of the Porsche factory drivers will make their season debut in the Rolex 24 at Daytona. [Via Crash.net]

Fit the punishment to the size of the crime pocketbook? – I thought this was a pretty interesting article in response to the man fined $290,000 recently in Switzerland for speeding. The crazy thing was, he was only doing something like 30 mph over the speed limit. Excessive? Sure, but not crazy fast. In 2007, the laws in Switzerland were changed to let judges determine fines based on a person's income and wealth for moderate misdemeanors. This includes excessive speeding and drunk driving. It's an interesting concept to fine people in a way that will actually cause them to think twice about committing the violation again. Would probably do wonders in helping people take traffic violations more seriously. [Via TheStar.com]

Price Is Right Contestant Walks Away With A Porsche…Or Does He?

I used to watch Price Is Right all the time with my mom when I was a kid. Even used to watch it while working out up until a few years ago when Bob Barker retired. Check out what happens when this guy bids on a 2010 Porsche Boxster in his Showcase.

Porsche 911 Turbo Video

You already know I've got a soft spot for the Porsche 911 Turbo. It's safe to assume that I'll post just about anything even remotely related to it. Yesterday I came across this Press Teaser video on the 911 Turbo that I found mesmerizing. Just love seeing those cars, the windy roads and hearing them rip by. I also love the two cars facing each other on the bridge. Porsche has a few press pictures similar to that with those same cars.

Porsche Trucks

I was doing some keyword research today for PorschePerfect and came across an interesting term that gets searched quite a bit in Google: Porsche Trucks. Global monthly searches for the term "Porsche Trucks" is right around 823,000. The crazy thing is when you compare this to the search term "Porsche Cayenne" which only gets around 1,000,000 monthly searches.

You might be asking yourself, "Who the heck cares?!"

I just find it very interesting that people think they are interested in a Porsche "truck" and that they would search for an SUV or the Cayenne based on the word "truck". To me a truck is something with a bed in the back and a smallerish cab up front…for the most part. A Subaru Brat, for instance, doesn't fit the truck image in my mind. But neither does an SUV, and in our case, a Porsche Cayenne.

Sure many SUVs are based on the same company's truck chassis. Durango, Suburban, Yukon, etc., but does that mean you should call an SUV a "truck"? Personally I don't think it does. To me that's like calling your old Volkswagen Beetle a Porsche 356 because they originally shared many of the same parts & mechanicals.

I'm not sure why it bugs me when people call SUVs trucks, but every time it happens I feel like saying, "If you really want a truck, GO BUY A TRUCK!" If you want to be a cowboy, go buy a cowboy hat, wranglers and some boots. Get yourself a can of chaw to make that nice ring in your pocket and talk about ropin steer.

I vote for calling an SUV an "SUV", not a truck.

That and two bits will buy you a cup of coffee.

TECHART GT Street RS Rocks The Track

I got an email this morning from TECHART about some very cool records they just set in their Porsche 911 GT2 based GT Street RS. This car is one sweet looking ride that really looks like it belongs more on the track than on the street. Course isn't that part of the whole point of this upgraded ride? I'm pretty sure it is.

If I was better versed in German, I could tell you the customizations, specs and prices of the different phases of this program. Unfortunately about all I can do in German is ask if you speak English and where I can go to empty my bottom (that one was for any Trigger Happy TV fans out there).

What I CAN tell you is what was achieved in this car. First of all, the TECHART GT Street RS broke the former lap record at the Sachsenring race track with a lap time of 1:31:94. Dang fast! It improved the current AutoBild SPORTSCARS lap record at the Sachsenring by 4.47 seconds. What's more, and I find this particularly cool for some reason, is they got this thing to stop from 100 km/h in just 36-yards. I'm assuming that's without hitting a wall to help them stop!

This is one cool ride. I sprinkled pictures throughout for your enjoyment.

Here's the full press release in case you don't trust me or just want to read the fine print for yourself:

The TECHART GT Street RS based on the 911 GT2 broke the lap record at theSachsenring race track

Record drive shortly before the turn of the year

Shift down a gear, come to rest – TECHART has organized the turn of the year very differently. After TECHART’s full size SUV speed record in the Italian Nardo, the TECHART GT Street RS based on the 911 GT2 broke the former lap record at the Sachsenring race track. High speed, pace, uniqueness – 100 % TECHART.

In the comparison carried out by AutoBild SPORTSCARS, TECHART impressively asserted its superiority over the competitors. Already before the record drive on the 3,671-meter circuit, the TECHART GT Street RS impressed spectators and proved its unique versatility. Apart from the sprinter qualities demonstrated several times, which were once more unheard of (from 0 to 100 km/hh in only 3.5 sec), the sports car displayed another quality that was just as important: A 36-yard braking distance at a speed of 100 km/h is looking to find its match. Once again, TECHART’s basic principles were confirmed: TÜV-tested and approved components as well as OEM quality in every detail.

For the conclusion of the extensive test program, the TECHART GT Street RS was able to crown once more the performance achieved on this day. With a lap time of 1:31.94 min, the winner of the Tuner Grand Prix 2008 and 2009 repeatedly demonstrated the TECHART winning gene. With more than 1.95 sec of head start, it left not only the competitors far behind, but improved the current AutoBild SPORTSCARS lap record at the Sachsenring by an unprecedented 4.47 sec.

Porsche Panamera Video

Kind of cool little video of the Porsche Panamera S and a driver giving the V8 a little workout. This isn't the usual stale video footage. The driver unleashes the inner child a bit.

Weekly Porsche Wrap

Porsche Design Studio sales are UP – In a time when we're in some of the worst financial shape our country, and potentially our world, has ever seen, we have these interesting anomalies. They're reporting that sales are up by more than 170% over the past two years. Interestingly, this was reported BEFORE the holiday season. They're hoping to expand from 84 stores to more than 100 worldwide in the near feature. Recession? What recession?! [Via core77.com]

No hybrids on the horizon for Porsche – This was again confirmed by Michael Macht recently. He mentioned it was technically possible, but not part of the plan. Porsche doesn't see real benefits for the added weight of the hybrid given that it's mostly city driving where a hybrid really shines, which they believe really isn't the style of driving a typical Porsche owner will do. Of course an electric Porsche is still on the road map, although probably not for a while. [Via CarThrottle.com]

3-Cylinder Porsche Boxster a possibility – I was a bit stunned to read this last week. It seems that Porsche, in an effort to comply with reduced emissions and stricter fuel economy, is considering a turbocharged, 3-cylinder version of it's engine for the Boxster. It's anticipated the engine could still produce 180 hp to 200 hp in this setup. I don't know why, but a 3-cylinder Porsche just seems like, well, half a car. If the engine performs like we have come to expect from Porsche, then I suppose it shouldn't make a difference. Will be interesting to see what they end up producing. [Via AutoGuide.com]

Porsche 911 GT3 RS roll cage crushed – Yep, you read that right. It seems that the driver of a 911 GT3 RS was able to destroy his roll cage by hitting a pole, then bouncing off of it into a wall. I'm not sure what came of the driver, but that'd be one heck of a crash. This was in Korea and the car was a 2004 Porsche 911 GT3 RS. [Via WreckedExotics.com]

Win a Porsche Outlaw 356

rod-emory-porsche-outlaw-356

I read about this fundraiser last month, but completely forgot to post it on the blog. Maybe it was some subconscious move to try and increase my chances of winning one heck of a sweet Porsche Outlaw 356! James O. reminded me of it last week though, so now everyone will have a chance to get in on the action.

Rod Emory over at Emory Motorsports has decided to donate his 1953 Porsche 356 Outlaw to Limbs for Life to help them raise money for their foundation. Limbs for Life offers amputees a chance at getting back to a normal life by providing prosthetic limbs to those that are unable to afford them. This is a great cause and one that you don't hear too much about.

Here are some specs on the car:

  • 1600 cc Engine
  • 4-speed transmission
  • 4-wheel drum brakes
  • Dark blue with gray interior
  • Current market value: $120,000

Only 2,000 raffle tickets will be sold and you better believe I bought one already!

The Emorys have built a heck of a restoration and modification shop in McMinnville, Oregon (that's about half an hour away from where I live and I really need to get out there to see them) specializing in Porsche 356s. They're one of the hot names in the Porsche 356 Outlaw movements. I love their work and you should see all the pictures on their site. Unbelievable! Check em out here: EmoryMotorsports.

Head over to Limbs For Life and check out the raffle here: LimbsForLife.org.

Also, here's a video Rod put together about the giveaway and why they're supporting this cause:

9ff Porsche Monstrous Supercar

9ff-gt9-r-front-three-quarter-view

News and links about the latest 9ff Porsche creation have been going around for a bit now. I'm late to the game, but still wanted to put this up because this is one of those crazy amazing supercars that stands to again propel Porsche to the top of the speed pack.

Last year, 9ff broke the coveted Bugatti Veyron speed record by hitting 254 mph. This was in the GT9 which also set a new official world record for the fastest speed on street-legal tires. This year, 9ff is claiming the GT9-R Porsche supercar will be able set a new production car world record by hitting a top speed of 257 mph. Here are some additional specs on the car:

  • 0 to 62 mph in 2.9 seconds, then on to 186 mph in 15.8 seconds
  • Up to 1120 hp all from a 6-cylinder motor
  • 3 power levels to choose from (750 hp, 987 hp, 1120 hp) that are all track optimized, but street legal (the top two options are geared towards flat out top speed)
  • Lightweight construction from top to bottom, with a tube frame and carbon-Kevlar body
  • Only 20 cars to be built for worldwide distribution

Of course you can also have the interior outfitted any way you'd like. As usual with these super high end rides, if you have to ask "How much?", this probably isn't a car for you. Official pricing has not been announced yet.

9ff-gt9-r-rear-three-quarter-view

To get you into what it would be like to drive a car like this at top speeds, here's a video Lyndon sent me showing test drivers hitting 392 km/h in a Porsche 9ff TR 1000. That's almost 243.5 mph! This is a must watch! Got my heart racing.

Was that crazy or what?! At first, I thought they were on the Autobahn, but it actually looks like they ended up with the speed test on a track in Papenburg, Germany.

The Man And The Porsche Video

I don't know much about the car or the driver, but I liked the footage and video work. Especially the last scene. Can you imagine having access to a track and a car like that on a gorgeous day like that? We can only dream.
