I recently had the chance to interview Dan Tsuchiya, Sr. Business Development Manager at eBay Motors. Dan is a big Porsche enthusiast, and I love eBay Motors with it’s endless possibility of great deals to be had, so I was excited to get his take on a few things.

What’s the best deal you’ve seen on eBay Motors from a buyers perspective?
A non running 996 (with clean title) for $5k in California. I only noticed and bid on it because I was looking for something like this since I had a spare drive-train to use. The thing is, there are deals like this going on with all makes and models on eBay Motors so you just have to look. We don’t yet have an alert system that spots a “deal” within the $50k plus listings (but that would be nice).

What’s the most outrageous car you’ve seen up for sale on eBay Motors?
Usually the movie or TV show cars are the best, not the most outrageous, but fun to read about. (Batmobile, replica Barricade from Transformers, etc.)

How about the most outrageous Porsche?
917 race cars, always cool.

What’s your personal opinion about the celebrity owned Porsches that have popped up on eBay Motors the last few months? Think they’re worth the premium people have paid for them?
There are a lot of celebrity fans out there that also like nice cars. It’s a great conversation piece and can bring in higher value as long as there are others who share the same passion. The beauty of eBay Motors is the auction process proves this out. If you go into it for the love of the celebrity instead of the investment…you’ve got the right mindset.

Where do you see the best deals on Porsches being online? Cars, Parts, Etc.?
Of course I’m biased, but you can find a lot of deals on eBay Motors. You can also find pretty good deals on forums, but these are sometimes difficult to navigate and are usually limited to local buying. For parts, forums do very well, like Pelican Parts, PCA’s site, and Rennlist. Given our vast selection, though, eBay Motors is probably where you’ll end up finding what you’re looking for, given both cars and parts are transacted on the site, and you have access to local, national and international inventory.

What are the top 3 tips you’d give buyers for purchasing cars on eBay Motors?
1. Reach out to the seller, get to know them and the car.
2. Get an inspection.
3. Don’t be afraid of dealers, especially for cars which were built within the past 10 years….our dealers back them.

What do you think about the horror stories buyers on eBay Motors have circulated over the years?
We have protections in place that make eBay Motors the safest place to buy and sell anything automotive online – things like seller feedback, vehicle inspections, free VHRs and Vehicle Purchase Protection. We always advise buyers to do their due diligence in terms of getting to know the seller, only communicating through the eBay platform, and taking advantage of vehicle inspections to ensure a smooth process. eBay Motors is a marketplace where literally millions of people transact on a monthly basis. With this volume, you do have the occasional issue, but it’s truly a very small percentage of overall transactions on the site.

In the Porsche category, for instance, what’s your take on the quality and representation of the sellers on eBay Motors? More legit than not or vice versa?
Within Porsche cars and parts, generally speaking the sellers and buyers are pretty knowledgeable about the products and are pretty aware of the online tools and communities out there. Because of this, the group as a whole is very legitimate and sell with high standards. Since we have a feedback system, try and navigate towards those sellers with a strong history of selling on eBay and if they are new, reach out to them.

Where do you see eBay Motors going in the next 3 to 5 years?
The world is heading online due to convenience, we will see more users coming to eBay Motors because we are the largest site that has both vehicles and parts in one location and are transaction-based instead of lead-based. Parts and accessories will continue to be a big focus for us – cars on the road are almost as old as they’ve ever been, and we see quite a few folks coming to our site for repair, replacement and performance parts. We’ll also continue to improve the buyer and seller experience. We’re making the site more personalized overall for a tailored experience based on past history and the current vehicles you own, making it easier to quickly find exactly you’re looking for, which helps both buyers and sellers. Mobile will also be a big part of what we do going forward. In 2010, eBay generated nearly $2 billion in global mobile sales, which is nearly triple its mobile sales in 2009. Look for an eBay Motors mobile app coming soon, that basically puts eBay Motors in your pocket, allowing enthusiasts to browse, bid and buy from just about anywhere.

If you were going to shop for a Porsche on eBay, what would you be looking for?
1. History on the car, even if it’s a dealer, knowing where it came from and condition.
2. Inspection (third party).
3. Total costs including shipping.

What do you think about the other exotic car categories on eBay Motors?
Fantastic, whether you are looking for a Gallardo, 599, 250 Lusso, GT2, or Quattroporte…..you’ll find it on eBay Motors.

Thanks Dan for taking the time to answer questions. Check out eBay Motors here: eBay Motors. I check it nearly every day and love seeing the cars up for sale and find it a good gauge for prices overall.

Most of you probably already know I’m a dreamer. I think you have to have big dreams to run an exotic car site centered around a marque like Porsche. When a site like Oodle.com comes around, it’s pretty easy to get caught up dreaming about the cars they have represented on the site. In fact, I somehow just wasted an entire hour going through listing after listing of Porsches. I had planned to only spend a few minutes looking around!

If you haven’t heard of Oodle.com, they’ve been around for a while. They’re an aggregator of classified ads, with some new features that have been released recently. They’re a handy source when you’re looking for something used. Also, lots of people have successfully sold all manner of items through their site. Today though, I want to focus on the auto listings.

Regardless of what you’re looking for, chances are high that Oodle.com has it listed. From a new Porsche Panamera to a used Ford Focus. And everything in between. I suppose you could even find a used Geo Metro if that’s what really made your heart flutter. (I’d rather not see any comments about how you LOVE Geo Metro’s.)

A quick search of the site for Porsche yields over 20,000 results. I spent the first 20 minutes just going through listings. Here are a couple of that are honorary Tempting Porsche cars:

1965 Porsche 912 – Offered at $3,900. Here’s some info from the ad on Oodle.com: “The body is rust free, yet carries a C-grade ‘Bahama Yellow’ paint job that’s many years old. There are multiple flaws, such as small dings, scratches, and even some paint lifting. Still, the car is utterly presentable as it is; personally, we wouldn’t mind keeping and enjoying it exactly like this. The chrome wheels still sparkle and the tires are excellent.”

2001 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 – Offered at $23,999. A lot of you will not like the black wheels, but I like em. This one has just over 97k miles on it. Red with gray interior. Some other highlights from the ad are aftermarket 19″ wheels, never seen snow or salted roads, no known mechanical issues.

There are certainly sexier cars out there, but this one is not a bad looking ride. I love the darkened windows, although that’s probably a ticket waiting to happen in Oregon.

Those are just a couple of the “usual” cars. Course that led to digging into more exotic Porsches and eventually other exotics. In my search of the Porsche results, I ran across a Porsche 959 and it was game over. 40 minutes later I was still searching through cars and dreaming about all of the possibilities.

Here are a couple more results worth mentioning:

1987 Porsche 959 – The first is the Porsche 959 I mentioned coming across. This impeccable example was purchased new by a collector in Japan, then brought into the US at a later date. The car only has 9k miles on it. Here is a little more info from the ad: “Everything works on this car including the Air Conditioning. Original odometer was swapped out for US compliance when the car was imported with 7,439 miles, current odometer shows 1,679. Total miles are 9,118.” Can you imagine owning this car?! Needs the stock wheels on it though.

2004 Porsche Carrera GT – Offered at $299,950. After a while, I started going nuts. Looking for the baddest, most expensive Porsches listed. This one is unbelievable. Check out some of these details: “This two owner example surely fits the bill. It is finished in GT Silver over black and has been pampered from day one and sparingly driven less than 5,400 miles since new. All of its servicing is up to date and it comes with complete dealer maintenance history. Also included are the original handbooks, the original $448,300 window sticker, Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, extra key, and clean CarFax. As you would expect, this Carrera GT is virtually spotless and in superb condition.”

This is just a small sampling of what you can find on Oddle.com. It’s not only a useful place to find a deal on just about any car you could possibly imagine, it’s a great place to fuel some of those dreams that remind us how much we love cars like Porsche.

I ran across an auction site that has 4 VERY nice Porsche 356s coming up for auction soon. I had to share because these are beautiful cars. I grabbed a little bit of the description for each car from the auction site. You can see all 4 cars plus a couple of replicas at Worldwide Auctioneers.

1957 Porsche 356 1600S “Super” Speedster

A numbers-matching example and in the hands of the current professional Porsche specialist vendor since the early part of this decade, the 1957 Porsche 356A 1600S “Super” Speedster offered here was last owned for nearly thirty-five years prior to his purchase by another devoted caretaker in Kentucky. A low-mileage un-restored original example with under 55,000 miles at the beginning of this decade, it was built and finished by Porsche in Ruby Red with a black interior. During the restoration that commenced only a few years ago, the car was comprehensively dismantled, stripped, and carefully refinished in the correct hue of Aquamarine Blue as seen here. Inside, the brilliant red “Autos International”-supplied interior built on original Speedster seats and correct oatmeal colored carpet was done at the same time and is complemented by a matching “Autos International” top, boot, and tonneau covers that are faithful to those originally fitted to the car when new. The dashboard instrumentation was not overlooked either, all of which were sent to the world-renowned North Hollywood Speedometer for comprehensive restoration prior to reinstallation. The car’s brightwork, chrome, and trim were likewise carefully redone or replaced at this time to complement the quality inherent in this example. Even the rare 1957-only bumper over-rider, original to this car per early photographs, was restored and retained.

1963 Porsche 356 Super 90 Cabriolet

Offered complete with a Certificate of Authenticity issued by Porsche AG, this very-fine and freshly-restored 1963 356B Super 90 Cabriolet is without a doubt a superb and thrilling example that benefits from the desirable Super 90 engine. Originally finished in ivory with black leather, during the no-expense-spared restoration carried out in California during the 1990s, the car was comprehensively changed to what is perhaps the most desirable color combination one could hope to find a 356 – lustrous black with a matching top over red leather. The body was stripped top to bottom, inside, out, and underneath to ensure that no trace of original finish remained, then painted and undercoated underneath.

1963 Porsche 356 Carrera 2 Cabriolet

Owned most recently by the specialist expert on Porsche 356s in a major Midwestern metropolis, this beautiful 1963 Porsche 356 Carrera 2 Cabriolet is one of well fewer than 20 thought to have ever been produced. Originally delivered for the European market, the car was snapped up by an astute American collector during the 1980s and restored by the legendary, award-winning Porsche expert Gary Kempton of GK Restoration at some point thereafter. The body was stripped of all parts and media cleaned. Ultimately, it was finished in its correct and authentic Heron Gray over a black leather interior with no detail having been overlooked either inside or out; from the car’s flawless chrome and trim on the outside to its correct German square-weave carpeting, black leather seats, wooden steering wheel, and instrument panel on the inside, there exists little, if anything to fault. It received a new full wiring harness, shocks, and tires, and the original date coded wheels received fresh chrome surfacing. The underside is properly coated as when it left the factory when new.

1964 Porsche 356C Coupe

Purchased by the present owner over two years ago in excellent driver condition, this 1964 356C Coupe was sent to the renowned Bob Smith Coachworks in Gainsville, Texas, for a full cosmetic restoration. Whilst this was in progress any mechanical deficiency was also attended to, and the car is therefore “fresh” and on the button, ready to tour or show as desired. It was recently used on a Texas tour where it performed quite admirably. No problems were encountered and the car remains in excellent tour condition today. The car features many desirable period sought-after accessories: period Marchal driving lights, chrome luggage rack, exhaust extensions, new road wheels and Pirelli tires, new seat belts, etc. to enable comfort and safety while on the open road.

A few weeks ago instaVIN contacted me about their new instant vehicle history access service. Sounded like CARFAX to me, but I figured I’d have a look anyway. After checking out the site, I have to say, I was impressed. instaVIN offers several valuable services that will help any of us when looking for that next used Porsche (or any used car for that matter).

Similar to CARFAX, instaVIN offers Vehicle History Reports detailing known information about any used vehicle, most notably the accident history. This is critical information, of course, when deciding whether to purchase a vehicle and how this history might impact the value of the car. What sets instaVIN apart from CARFAX, though, is the ability to get this data not only thru their web site, but also via your cell phone.

Once you create an account on the instaVIN.com site, you can link your cell phone up to your account and enable vehicle reports via text messaging. This has the potential of being VERY cool when you’re in front of a car, but didn’t pull the vehicle history report to bring with you. An auction or last minute stop on a dealer’s lot would probably serve as the handiest locations for this feature. The tech geek in me loves the ability to use my phone for something like this though.

The Accident History Reports are only $1.99 for the first report and $2.99 for each additional report. That’s really cheap, especially considering how much a covered up accident could cost you in future repairs.

The instaVIN folks were nice enough to send me a code to try the system out and it functioned exactly as I expected. The online report I ran on a 2007 Porsche 911 Turbo (997) came up clean and the price valuator showed the price was in line with what the seller on Craigslist was asking for the car. Here’s a sample of what the online report looks like:

I decided to try getting an accident report from my phone for the second report. After connecting my phone to my account, all I had to do was text the VIN number to INSTA and within seconds I had a response showing no accident history and base values of the car. This particular car I found on eBay and showed no accident history, but did have a title issue reported in the auction. Although title problems can oftentimes be sorted out more easily than vehicle damage from an accident, it’d be worth it to pay for a more expanded report on a vehicle you’re interested in buying. To the right is a screen shot of what was sent to my iPhone.

In looking around the site, I found 2 other tools instaVIN offers on their site that are kind of cool:

Vehicle Valuator – A tool that will give you values of the vehicle you’re looking for or trying to sell based on the local market. You plug in some basic things like Year, Make, Model and Zip Code and the tool will show you how many vehicles it knows about in your area matching your criteria and what the range of values are. This tool is free.

Sale Documentation & Bill of Sale – This is a service/tool that comes into play when buying a selling a used vehicle. With step-by-step instructions, buyers and sellers can easily navigate through a properly recorded vehicle transaction. Once a buyer and seller have committed to the deal using the Pre-Sale Agreement and deposit slip provided with the service, they can then certify the sale with a comprehensive sales agreement including ‘sold as is’ and warranty clauses. As a final step, instaVIN provides immediate access to a state specific Bill of Sale for all fifty states. Each step allows both parties to formally agree on all aspects of the sale without any hidden costs. This is well worth the $15.99 cost of the service to ensure you do the deal right.

All in all, the instaVIN service looks very promising and I love the pricing. It’s cheap and gets you the basic information in the Vehicle Accident Reports. Definitely a service worth checking out next time you’re in the market for a used Porsche. You can view the site here: instaVIN.com.

For anyone interested in using the service, instaVIN sent me 5 codes that will get you 2 reports for free. If you’re in the market for a used Porsche or other vehicle and want to try the service out, shoot me an email via the contact form and I’ll hook the first 5 people up with a code for the 2 free reports.

I hadn’t been on Craigslist.com in a while to look at Porsches for sale and decided to pop on today to see what was out there. I was surprised to find 3 912s for sale, all in Camas-Washougal Washington. 2 of the 3 pictures look like they were taken from the same spot. All 3 ads were written similarly.

Nothing crazy about this, other than kind of sad to see someone possibly liquidating their collection.

Check out the 3 ads:

1967 Porsche 912 Coupe – $10,500

This car was originally sand beige, and a complete color change to light ivory was done in 1987. It does have a few small blemishes from 20 years of use, but still looks very, very nice. There are no apparent rust issues with this car. The interior was redone in 1997. The wool inserts are not factory correct, but they feel great and the overall fit and finish of the interior is exceptional. The car runs well, but the carbs pop occasionally; I assume that this is a tuning issue but it’s not enough of a nuisance for me to take the time to address. The car drives wonderfully. It is the quietest and smoothest 912 I’ve driven, a very civilized ride. My only complaint is that the seat recliners slip a notch every now and then. The wheels are genuine Fuchs 5.5″X15″. They are not correct for this car, but they’re in excellent condition and look very nice in the SWB wheel wells. If the buyer prefers a set of chrome steel wheels, I have a set that can replace the Fuchs and would discount the price accordingly. [Ad on Craigslist.com: 1967 Porsche 912 Coupe]

1969 Porsche 912 Targa – $18,500

A beautiful car in a rare color combination as it came from the factory. Matching numbers per the factory letter/cardex. It was restored in the early ’90s by a previous owner, and has been driven less than 20,000 miles since. Odometer currently shows 93xxx. At the time of restoration, it appears that all rust issues were addressed with the exception of the battery boxes. The car was repainted its original silver metallic, a special order color in 1969. The interior was also refurbished at that time in the original red leather. The only notable cosmetic deficiency is a result of aftermarket mirrors having been installed at one time; the mounting holes on the passenger side are still present. This car runs and drives very well. My only complaint is that the pedal cluster has a bit of play in it, not unusual for these cars and a fairly inexpensive repair. The car comes with the flat Fuchs as pictured. I can substitute the Fuchs with a set of very nice chrome steel wheels, although their dates are a bit early for the production date of this car. [Ad on Craigslist.com: 1969 Porsche 912 Targa]

1969 Porsche 912 Coupe – $13,500

A nice 912 that runs and drives very well. Repainted its original color of light ivory many years ago. Seats have been reupholstered in the original red color with correct corduroy inserts. If you’ve never sat in a Porsche with something other than a black interior, you’re in for a treat, as the red/black combination is stunning and really brightens up the cabin. The only apparent rust issue is a little spot at the lower front corner of the driver’s door; smaller than the nail on your pinky finger. It’s shown in one of the pictures below; I taped a penny next to it to show scale. It looked exactly like that when I bought the car in 2006 (without the penny!). The dash panel was replaced many years ago with a non-speaker version; it’s not original but looks better than a badly-cracked original piece. 14″ Fuchs, including the spare. I would classify this car as a very nice driver, with just a few small nicks here and there that aren’t really noticeable. About 10,000 miles on a complete engine rebuild by Small Car Performance in Tacoma in 2004. The car is licensed as a collector car in Washington State, with a date-correct license plate which stays with the car if it remains in Washington. [Ad on Craigslist.com: 1969 Porsche 912 Coupe]

As it turns out, all 3 are indeed owned by the same person. I guess I always expected when it came time for someone to sell more than a couple of cars, they’d go through an auction house or some specialized dealer rather than listing on Craigslist.com. Some decent drivable examples of older 911/912 models.

Be amazing to have the space, time, money, etc. to have a little collection of Porsches like this. I suppose that’s how large collections get started and marriages are ruined!

I must be a true Porsche fanatic, because I can’t imagine getting rid of ANY Porsche. I’ve already got a list of Porsches I’d like to own someday. As much as I think I’d just like to own one at a time, I think I’d probably end up being more of a collector sort because I’d have a hard time parting with a car that was on the list. Again, I think I’m just a junior high boy at heart (the collecting part at least).

So when I come across people wanting to trade their Porsches, it’s always interesting to see what they’re wanting to trade for. It’s kind of like they’re placing a value on the car (which they technically are), but more than that, I see it as them placing a value on Porsche ownership overall. Again, maybe I’m just a Porsche freak, but I always think that “ownership” is as valuable as the car itself. That’s one of the reasons I’m amazed at Boxster prices and that more people aren’t snatching them up, just to have a taste of what owning a Porsche is all about.

I’ve come across a couple of somewhat interesting trade offers on Craigslist lately.

First Trade is an offer for a 1988 Carrera Targa. It’s Guards Red and looks like it’s in really good condition. He’s asking $18,800 OR trade for a Class C Motorhome. I guess I can see that being a reasonable trade. It’s not like he wants a backhoe or anything.

Second Trade is a fella looking to trade a 1974 914 “for a truck”. The 914 is being rebuild right now. That’s all he has to say. An in process rebuilder 914 for your truck. Think he’d take an old Ford Ranger in trade? How about one of those Volkswagen Rabbit Pickups? Don’t know why I have a hard time with it, I guess it just seems a little white trash.

I’m sure I’m the one who has the problem here. For some reason I just have issue with people who want to trade their Porsches for other stuff. Selling a Porsche doesn’t bother me, but trading kind of makes it feel like the Porsche isn’t worth anything anyway, so give me your junk, I’ll give you my junk (Porsche) and we’ll all be happy. Just seems wrong. Please tell me I’m not the only one who feels this way…

Time for a couple more Porsches that I would buy in a heartbeat (or maybe two or three at most) if I had the money. As always, I’m sure I’m a bit of a glutton for punishment with one of them since it’s a bit older and probably a bit on the rougher side (you might want to check out my
Pre-Purchase Inspection post if you consider the first Porsche below).

Tempting Porsche #1

This first Porsche will make all of the “purists” out there happy being that it’s an early 90′s air cooled model. It’s a black 1991 Carrera 2 Cabriolet. It’s got just over 97k miles on it. The one bummer is it’s a Tiptronic transmission. Sid’s cars (from Front Row Auto) tend to be a bit on the rough side, but if you’re careful, you can find some great deals from him.

One thing I’m not sure of is an older cabriolet. I’ve gotten kind of spoiled by the automatic, push button function of the later model cab tops. I do like the modern yet pre-996 look of the car though. Here’s a partial list of equipment:

- ABS (4-Wheel)
- Air Conditioning
- Alloy Wheels
- AM/FM Stereo
- Cassette

- Cruise Control
- Dual Front Air Bags
- Dual Power Seats
- Leather
- Power Door Locks

- Power Steering
- Power Windows

Price: $14,995

Tempting Porsche #2

The second is a bit off the beaten path from my usual picks for Tempting Porsches. It’s a 2007 Cayman with just 22k miles on it. This one is at Freeman Motor Company, one of my favorite dealerships in the area, and I’ve looked at this car first hand. It even still has the new car smell (now how can you put a price on that?!). Here’s a little more info from the ad:

One Owner, Factory Warranty, Navigation, Winter Package, Heated Leather, Xenon Lights, memory seat, home link.

This one really is a nice car, especially for a Cayman. Right at the sweet spot being 2 years old, low miles, and in near perfect condition. Also the blue is a nice deep color not really captured by the picture. You’re getting a lot of Porsche for the money.

Price: $34,995

Everyone always says you should get an inspection done on any used Porsche you’re considering before buying. The car can be expensive to purchase and even more expensive to maintain, so why take chances.

While looking for a Porsche a few months ago, I decided to take one of the cars I was considering in for an inspection before I bought it. The car happened to be a 1999 911 Cabriolet, only in white instead of the black one I actually ended up buying.

The natural place you think of going for such a service is the Porsche dealership, so off I went. I have to say, my experience at Sunset Porsche was pretty good. The service guys I dealt with were nice and answered a lot of questions. Other than going back and forth trying to get the tech on the phone who actually performed the inspection, it was pretty painless.

Here’s the thing though. Take a look at the sample of some of the pages, especially the cover page:

It’s probably a little tough to see, but the whole inspection report is like a bad photocopy from a bad copy of several originals ago. It’s got grainy effects from dirt on the copier, and the bottom is shifted left like someone put it in the copier crooked at one point.

Now I know it’s just paper a tech used, and the real value is in the service performed, but come on, can’t they print a fresh copy out for the tech to mark up? After all, this is PORSCHE. I can turn out a better doc than this on my little portable color inkjet. I just think it presents a poor image for a Porsche shop to give a customer this low grade report.

The service, which is really the whole point of the pre-purchase inspection, was really good. They spent about 4 hours with the car going over more things than I would have expected. All the usual stuff, plus things like measuring gaps, looking for fit and finish changes, etc. In fact, they found a few things that appeared suspect leading me to believe the car had been in some type of accident at some point, even though CarFax produced a clean report. I passed on the car for this reason alone.

Inspection Cost: $285

Although I hadn’t really thought of it ahead of time, I realized that there are lots of places that can provide inspections of vehicles you’re thinking about buying. One of the places I’m hot on at the moment is Gran Prix Imports. Take a look at their inspection report:

That’s much more in line with what I expected to see from Porsche. Covers pretty much the same stuff only much nicer looking. In fact, this one only looks a little beat up because I carried it around for a couple of weeks. Here’s the great thing…

Inspection Cost: $200

I’m quickly learning that you really don’t need to go to the dealership for much of anything. My first thought is always “the dealer will do it better” but that just isn’t the case. There are lots of little reputable shops and other places like Gran Prix Imports. Heck, Gran Prix is the Portland Lamborghini dealership. A different beast altogether, but the level of technical expertise and service required is at least equal to what Porsche would require, if not greater in my opinion. I’ve found their work on the Giveaway Porsche to be excellent. I’ve also talked to a couple of other Porsche owners who use them for their service work.

Bottom line, a pre-purchase inspection is a must unless you’re mechanical. Even then, the couple hundred bucks is a worthwhile investment to avoid a major ownership disaster. One piece of advice, make sure you go over the inspection with the mechanic who performed it. Preferably while the car is still in the shop.

I’ve always been a 944 fan. Probably because that’s the first Porsche I ever rode in and the first one I ever drove. So it won’t be a surprise that the first Tempting Porsche is a 944. But not just any 944, it’s a 944 Turbo S. This actually IS a rare car and has super low mileage. This thing is dang fast too.

From the ad:

Showroom Condition 1988 944 Porsche Turbo-S. This 951Limited Edition is very rare with all options.

HAS ONLY 22,171 Original Miles.

Price: $25,900

Although I don’t know that I’d actually spend $26k on a car like this, I don’t doubt that it’s worth it. Sure would be a fun car to have and would represent many great memories for me.

I don’t know what it is about 944′s this time around, but both of these caught my attention. The Turbo S above would be a sweet car to have, but this straight 1986 944 Turbo would be a bit more daily driverish in my opinion. Not quite as special as the Turbo S. Plenty fast though. I love the look of this car and aside from maybe changing the wheels back to something more stock, this would be a great daily driver.

Maybe you like Porsche 914s or maybe you looking for a “starter” Porsche for your teenager who’s 16th birthday is coming up. Whatever the motivation, have we got a 914 for you!

First of all, check out the title to this ad:

1970 Porsche Factory 914-6!!!!! – $29500

Of course anything with 5 exclamation marks capping it has GOT to be good/special/rare (don’t get me started on that topic) right!!!!! Uh, yeah…

My first thought was, “What the heck?!”. Paul’s instant message to me after seeing the ad was “What makes a 914 worth 30K?” Tapping into my vast knowledge of all things Porsche, my response was, “I dunno.” Turns out, this actually is something special. Here’s the rest of the ad:

1970 Porsche 914-6. Ivory white, black top and interior. This car is in great shape inside and out. Fresh rebuilt motor in the last 2500 miles and the motor is still under waranty. Original color was Irish green, but who ever did the repaint looks like they removed the motor, all glass, and weatherstrip, there is no green showing on this car. Runs and drives great, and would make a great addition to anyones collection.

According to Wikipedia, great knowledge keeper of the Internet, the 914-6 was a short lived model with only 3360 examples produced between 1970 and 1972. All of them featured the 2.0 liter flat-six engine.

And now we see why a car that was only $6,000 new is now worth 5x that amount. At least I guess. I still have a hard time thinking someone would spend thirty grand on just about 914 and especially one that isn’t original.

Course if you are really into 914-6s, there was a Porsche 914-6 factory racer that spent it’s life as a test vehicle in Stuttgart up for sale. The price? Just $325,000! You can see picks over at Jalopnik.com.
